Question #1:
It's no surprise BP is always looking out for its bottom line — but it's at least slightly more surprising that the Interior Department, the federal government's executive department charged with regulating the oil industry, has done such a shoddy job of preventing this from happening.
Ten years ago, there were already warnings that the backup systems on oil rigs that failed on Deepwater Horizon would be a problem. The Interior Department issued a "safety alert" but then left it up to oil companies to decide what kind of backup system to use. And in 2007, a government regulator from the same department downplayed the chances and impact of a spill like the one that occurred last month: "[B]lowouts are rare events and of short duration, potential impact to marine water quality are not expected to be significant."
The Interior Department's Louisiana branch may have been particularly confused because it appears it was closely fraternizing with the oil industry. The Minerals Management Service, the agency within the department that oversees offshore drilling, routinely accepted gifts from oil companies and even considered itself a part of the oil industry, rather than part of a governmental regulatory agency. Flying on oil executives' private planes was not rare for MMS inspectors in Louisiana, a federal report released in late May says. "Skeet-shooting contests, hunting and fishing trips, golf tournaments, crawfish boils, and Christmas parties" were also common.
Is it any wonder that Deepwater Horizon was given a regulatory exclusion by MMS?
It gets worse. In the month after April 20, when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded, the Interior Department approved 27 new permits for offshore drilling sites.
Here's the kicker: Two of these permits were for BP.
But it gets better still: 26 of the 27 new drilling sites have been granted regulatory exemptions, including those issued to BP.
Question #2:
Not only am I meeting the parents, it will be Mother's Day too! We haven't been together long but I can't show up empty handed as it is custom in my family and disrespectful not to bring a gift to any occasion. They are driving in from out of town, so flowers is out of the question, and we will be at a ball tournament all day so I think a plant is as well (no use in giving her a plant that has died in the heat from sitting in either of our cars all day). I'm unsure of if and what kind of wine she drinks. The only thing I really know is that she plays a lot of golf, but I think a gift certificate is thoughtless. I need ideas! Guys, what would you like to see your girlfriend bring your mom on mothers day, and girls, what would you feel comfortable gifting to your mans mom. I don't want something too sappy, it's not me. Simple and thoughful. What do you think?
Question #3:
My dad and grandfather love golf and as a gift i would like to send them to watch Tiger Woods.
He is suppossed to be here in Albuquerque, New Mexico in August for Noda Begay's golf tournament, but... idk exactly when and how to get the tickets for them.
If anyone could get me the details or website that takes me directly there to get them that would be great. I dont want to be searching around on another website.
Thanks
Question #4:
I am going to the Bridgestone Invitation in Akron Ohio with my dad and brother as a gift. Just wondering what tips or suggestions people have for going, what to bring, what kind of food to bring, eating there, etc.
Thank you
Question #5:
My dad is a scratch golfer and its his favorite thing. Luckily, he has a job where he can play everyday. My siblings and I are at a loss of what to give him for fathers day. We belong to a country club and three other golf courses... so he doesn't need gift certificates to play. He just bought a new driver and putter and doesn't want new irons. He loves his bag and everything. He just bought a bunch of golf shirts - not that he didn't have enough already :-). Anyway, I have no idea what to give him. The Monday after fathers day we are holding a golf tournament for a charity, he loves to give back to the community. I just have NO idea what to give him. He takes me to the driving range or golfing everyday and thats how I became good.. so I just want to give him something.
Any ideas would be awesome!
Thanks!!
Question #6:
Swag is extra company items or booty or something that one gets at a golf tournament, for example. Free prizes or gifts.
Question #7:
A client of mine invited me to his wife's birthday party at their house this Saturday night. I know my client very well, as I have seen him on a daily basis for the past couple of years. Also, we have gone to many corporate events together, such as fishing trips and golf tournaments.
His wife is in her mid forties and all I know about her is that she runs marathons and works from home. I just met her for the first time last week when we all went jogging on a Sunday morning.
My client mentioned that it is just going to me a small event with 15-20 of their close friends. What would be an appropriate gift/card to bring to her birthday party?
Question #8:
My husband and I talked about a week before our 11th anniversary to resolve some of our conflicts. WE have a very long way to go but hopefully going in the right direction. Our 11th ann. was this past Sat. He had his annual golf tournament. THought he might make it home a little early to spend time with me. Came home 11pm. TOurnament over 8:30. He went to a bar with his bro and friends. No card, Nothing. When I gave him his card and gift he said it was uncalled for. He said we didn't give gifts last year. I reminded him I did, he didn't. I don't know when he decided not to gift or card. Happens on all occasions. Christmas I have to tell him what to get me. No surprises. Is this normal or does he really not appreciate our marriage or me?
